Sorry for the silence, everyone! A string of projects, shoots and events kept us from our duties. To make it up to you, here's a table setting full of bright, brilliant color we created for last month’s event at Travadavi in Atlanta. As soon as I saw this prismatic print from Lulu DK in candy-coated colors of coral, teal, navy and…
Have you seen the new special issue on organizing from Martha Stewart? I was surprised to find two projects I produced years ago as the Senior Style Editor at Living. For a bathroom without shelves in an apartment above Martha's carriage barn in Bedford, I had six brass shelf brackets nickel-plated, then paired them with lightweight lacquered trays for extra storage.…
If you want to go treasure hunting with me in D.C. or Atlanta, we still have a few spots left! I always love sharing my secrets on how to find (and reimagine!) the very best things at the flea market, including china, silver, linens, furniture, fabric and art. We're doing two trips to the Big D.C. Flea this weekend and…
Two colors I adore with pink: black and white. And who better to expound on the virtues of this iconic combination than celebrated interior designer Celerie Kemble? Celerie I've known for years, ever since my days as a decorating editor at House Beautiful. Charming, sweet and supremely talented, she's a bright star who's refreshingly down to earth. Jaithan and I…
Here's a cake sure to sweeten up the Valentines in your life. Pick up three boxes of your favorite white cake mix—or work from scratch if you have the time—along with a bottle of Wilton's Icing Color in petal pink. Split each box into two batches for a total of six, then add increasing amounts of dye little by little until…
Last summer's treasure hunt through the World's Longest Yard Sale has just inspired two more shopping expeditions in March, and I hope you'll join me! Our first stop will be on Sunday, March 4th in Chantilly, Virginia for one my favorite flea markets, the Big D.C. Flea, where I'll show you how to find (and style!) the very best things, including…
Under a cerulean blue sky, on the outer banks of North Carolina and about a million miles away from her busy life in High Point, Elizabeth Harris sat quietly alone, listening to the sea, when a call for entries I’d posted to Facebook and Twitter popped up on her phone. Summer had just begun, and I was on the hunt, this…
I've always loved white. It soothes and stirs the soul, and I never grow tired of its infinite subtlety. In my catering days, I cultivated a voracious appetite for ironstone platters, layering one upon other in precarious stacks that have since followed me from city to country. For inspiration and delight all about white, click here. Now, to you: How do…
We were awakened Friday from our gluttonous stupor by the sound of two men in a truck, dumping a cord of wood on our front lawn. That's 4 x 4 x 8 or 128 cubic feet—plenty to keep our fires stoked during the harsh winter months. (Did I mention it snowed on Easter?) In my haste, however, I'd neglected to ask…
While many of us are in the kitchen today, peeling and pureeing, blanching and baking, I thought I'd share a few images of our own Thanksgiving table. At the moment, good friends are en route from city to country for in intimate dinner in the dining room. The Oriental rug I found at an estate sale in Old Lyme, Connecticut, then…
Thanksgiving is upon us, and you know what that means: time to polish up the silver (and brass!) for a stylish season of holiday entertaining. But despite even the best intentions, antique serving pieces, whether found at a flea market or inherited from family, deteriorate with time. Silver can dull and surfaces pit, often leaving heirloom quality pieces bound for…
From Palm Springs, we flew to Chicago, where the weather wasn't so kind. After the quick drive to Woodstock, a quaint, little suburb northwest of the city, we settled into our digs at the Royal Victorian Manor, otherwise known as the "Cherry Street Inn" in the 1993 film, Groundhog Day. While in town, I did two presentations on holiday decorating…
We hopped a plane to Palm Springs to visit friends, scour thrift stores, and kick back by the pool. Good-bye, snowdrifts; hello, sun!
It's not too late to join me for a glittering evening of inspiration and delight at the Woodstock Opera House in Woodstock, Illinois. On Thursday, November 17, for one night only, I'll be sharing my very best secrets to easy, chic decorating and entertaining that will dazzle friends and family from Thanksgiving all the way through New Year's! It's part…
Saturday night's snowstorm felt more like some cruel trick of nature than a tasty Halloween treat. Jaithan and I had just settled into the library, an ironstone bowl of herbed popcorn between us and the Exorcist (Part 2) on the tube, when the lights began to flicker. At 10:58 pm, as though the swift, final good night for days, the…
Here's an easy, inexpensive way to add style to store-bought pumpkin pails. Paint the eyes, nose and mouth with glue, glitter them a ghoulish hue, and replace the handle with ribbon. How spooktacular is that?
'Tis the time for ghosts and goblins, for tricks and treats of a sordid sort. Scare up a few basics (paper, scissors, paint) to create these Halloween crafts, some of them new, some of them old, but all of them sure to rouse the soul.
The invitation to Jaithan's birthday soirée in the garden encouraged guests to dress in festive attire, inspired by a journey into India via Palm Beach. The celebration culminated with a layered lemon cream cake I prepared in the shape of a princely turban. Here are more images of the evening through the eyes of photographer Miki Duisterhof.
Jaithan turned 35 last summer, so to celebrate, we threw an Indian feast in the garden and invited Lonny to capture it. Perhaps our insider tips for throwing larger-than-life parties might inspire a princely feast of your own.
Join us this Thursday at the glittering new Lauren by Ralph Lauren Shop at Bloomingdale's! We'll sip Pinot Grigio, nibble on crab cakes and revel in luxury! It's all part of the Decorate Like a Pro extrava-GAHN-za, featuring style tips and tricks from design bloggers like lil' ol' me. Here's an ad from today's New York Times. The…
Last summer, the folks over at Ralph Lauren asked me to design a vignette around their new St. Honoré bedding collection, debuting at Bloomingdale's this fall. As soon as I saw that chic pagoda pattern on the duvet, I knew I wanted to create a room that was glamorous and beautiful with subtle pops of pink and a great mix…

For one night only, I'll be sharing my very best secrets to easy, elegant holiday decorating and entertaining that will dazzle friends and family. From the front door to the fireplace mantel, intimate gatherings to lavish parties, get the inside scoop…
Change is in the air, my friends, so why not freshen up things up around the house as well? Here's a makeover story I produced in the current issue of Woman's Day after a fantastic trip to a rummage sale, benefitting the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset, New Jersey. I loved the legs on this bench, but the fabric and…
Irene may have foiled our plans for the beach, but we did manage to score this vibrant array of spireas and asters from the Farmer's Market to brighten our days at home. Have a great start to the week, everyone!
