Flea Markets – Antiques Garage and Annex

It's been a quiet weekend in the city with most New Yorkers still enjoying the last, lazy days of summer before the busy onset of fall. Despite a tempting invitation from my friends Marty and Robin for a long weekend away at their beautiful, working farm in Buck's County, Pennsylvania, I opted instead to stick around here—maybe do a little…

Before & After – Chinoiserie Dining Chairs

Here's another one of my favorite makeovers I did with my good friend Matthew Hunt for a video series called Ford Models 360. With a little bit of paint and punchy turquoise fabric, we turned four chairs we found at Housing Works (a great charity thrift store) from ticky tacky to chinoiserie chic. Object of the Day – Cream Soup Bowls

I love the classical shape of these bowls and the daintiness of their handles. The pattern, "Rhapsody" from George Jones Crescent of England, pictures a sweet bouquet of ferns and forget-me-nots. Object of the Day – Gentleman’s Grooming Brush

Yesterday, at the flea market here in town, I picked up this gentleman's set of grooming brushes. They're from Owens Brush Co., the precursor to Oral-B, with Art Deco detailing from the 20s. I love the mix of materials: a pure bristle brush and an ebony wood handle emblazoned with a sterling silver crest. In fact, at good flea markets,…

Instant Curb Appeal: Amazing Awnings

On weekends, whenever I'm out in the country or at the beach visiting friends and we're driving around town, usually from one antique store to another, I always find myself gazing at the houses I wish could be mine. More often than not, it's the old, beautiful ones I love with lush, mature plantings and windows covered graciously in awnings.…
