On the hunt for a little holiday inspiration last week, Jaithan and I were out and about in the West Village snapping a few pictures of our favorite wreaths. Take a look, then cast your own vote!
My favorites are 4 and 6 for proper size in relation to door and style in relation to surroundings and other accouterments.
Simplicity is often the best and most tasteful.
Mom and I are out and about at night to see the holiday decorations. In Torrington, CT they have Santa’s Villiage. It has rain deer and hot coco and has been in operation since the 40’s. Truly, an experience. Then we have the Litchfield House tour. It is nice to see all the grand old homes done up for the season. Just wonderful. Then there is Lords Shrine in Litchfield. With all the recent snow, I am sure it will be beautiful. There is just so much to do during this season. Way too much to snap photos of!
Hello you two men about town,
I lived at 129 W. 15th on the ground floor of a brownstone (though not the Village, it was on the border of Chelsea and the village, so I called it The Chillage).
Every year I decorated the entire exterior of the brownstone as a gift to everyone in the building, including wreaths for all the doors and windows.
My front door being at ground level was irresistable to the grinches who loved to steal my wreath.
No matter how much wire I used to secure it, someone would snatch the wreath off my door.
I stayed up late one night, and heard a thud on my door. I ran and and threw the door open only to see a guy running and laughing with glee, holding my wreath aloft as he rounded the corner.
Well, I laughed too, and just bought a box of a dozen wreaths from the flower market, and just replaced them as they got pinched.
I figured it was my Christmas gift to some poor suckers who were starving to death ha ha

PS If you have time check out my Street Walking post for a mention of ER…
A classic magnolia wreath looks magnificent against the black door. The lush garland creates a perfect frame. I love it and am slightly envious of the magnolia – it’s difficult to find and extremely expensive here in Canada.
Okay…they are all lovely in their own way. I picked #6 cos the urns looked great as a balance, but I also liked #1 for the “wow” effect. I saw a wreath here on the island made out of wooden shingles…so pretty! They sprayed it silver and just put a green bow on it. It was layered in a way you would put cookie on a plate. If I can remember where I saw the darn thing I’ll get a picture of it 🙂 I love the old city doors…great pic’s gents.
i am seeking a design to mirror for a clients project. with your good eye it could be informative and fun.
i voted for 4 the overall use of elements made for a great look!
Hi Eddie and Jaithan, Originally from Queens, now living in Rockland County, I spent all day Saturday at the Columbus Circle Holiday Boutiques picking up gingerbread cookies and German wine from a vendor that came all the way from Germany. Then, off to DaNico’s, my favorite Italian restaurant in Little Italy. Have you been there yet? Next, pick eucalyptus branches at the Union Square farmers market. The house smells so Christmasy! Off to Grand Central Terminal for their holiday light show as well as their Holiday Boutiques. Of course, had to stop in At St. Pat’s then cross the street to see the beautiful angels and Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Nothing like Christmas in NY. ~~ Joanne
My favorites were 1, 4, and 6–1 because the magnolia leaves played off the color of the surrounding brick. 4 and 6 because of their elegant simplicity. Love your blog!
I am quite fond of Picture 1, but the wreath is too large for the door, and I can imagine the sounds of leaves brushing against the doorframe—and one having to avoid face-wreath contact. Therefore my vote is for Picture 6, which is quite elegant, earthy, seasonal without being overwhelmingly so.
#6 just really catches my eye, but I have a feeling it’s the door & not just the wreath. Merry Merry Christmas you two! Looking forward to a fun time of blogging in 2009.
I love this post!!! The doors are fabulous. You found these doors all in one neighborhood? Have you thought about publishing a book and simply doors? You could call it “Simply Doors”. HA! My fav. is number 2. I do not have an eloquent answer why…I just love it.
I mentioned your fabulous wreath o’ Christmas balls crafty project on my blog. I wound up with a plethora of vintage ornaments, so next year I’m crafting a wreath. Thanks for the hot tip! 🙂
awesome idea Eddie! I love front doors:) I had to go with #6, but they are all beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for the fun poll. Have a magical holiday! xo
I haven’t been able to visit your blog as much lately because of the busy season. However, my first break today and I’m here. As usual, great ideas and inspiring images. I thought all 5 were nice so I went with the nicest door which for me was number 3. The red door. Looking forward to hearing more about your holiday season and your plans for the new year.
I’m a Texas girl, but one of my dream trips has to be NYC during the Christmas season. I want to see the decorated store windows, experience the hustle and bustle of shopping, and watch the skaters at Rockefeller Center. In the meantime, I’ll just live vicariously through you, okay? 🙂
After very close inspection, I chose #3 — but I’d absolutely hide the door knocker as it distracts enormously from the wreath. I like the way the berries and pine cones accent the door and the brick tones. (And doesn’t it have a nice country feel?)
I love them all…and all for different reasons…i love red velvet ribbons, i love a fruits and nuts and pinecones. I love large wreaths, i love petite ones. I love a glossy painted door I love pine swags. I love urns with pine. They are all beautiful. Check out my wreath athttp://capeanndiaries.blogspot.com/2008/12/welcoming-in-holiday-season.html
Merry Christmas E & J!
I love the first one but I think the scale is a little off. I picked number 3 because although I love 1,2,and 5- the scale seems off compared to the door. It’s interesting to see what people picked!
While I love natural wreaths and decoration, I really love a bit of sparkle and shine at the holidays. Color and reflective surfaces make holiday decoration so eye-catching, cheerful and luxurious. For me, Eddie and Jaithan, your tree and wreath are perfection!
actually vote number one should be on door number four, door five shouldn’t have bothered, door four could have given a little more effort and door 2 and 3 should swap. Door six is the only one that got it right.
As much as I love to see wreaths during the holidays, I enjoyed this post just as much for the doors themselves. I have always loved doors, and seeing the ways in which the owners decorate their entries. Once, on a trip to Charleston, I took an entire roll of film (before I went to digital) of doors in Charleston, SC.
I’m a southern gal, so I’d have to go with #1. Magnolia, my magnolia!

Ah, me, your voting machine doesn’t work! I love the simplicity of 4!
I liked #1 because it had color, it catches the eye.
I’m always a sucker for magnolia! You inspired me to set a pretty table for dinner (see here: http://www.springchickdesigns.blogspot.com)

I tried to vote, but for some reason it wouldn’t work. I vote for #5…it’s a bit small for the door, but i like how it looks…
I loved #3 against the red door. The tradition of the greenery with pinecones and berries. A classic!

All the doors were beautiful and hard to pick a favorite- but I do love the Magnolia one!
Maybe it’s the Louisiana girl in me, but I love the wreath made of magnolia leaves. It makes me want to go back home!
suggestion guys for another contest?
‘GATES OF WEST VILLAGE’ vote for your favorite.

I found myself voting for the door itself as much as the wreaths–what fun!

Gorgeous! I’m going with #4 for the win.

I thought all the doors were gorgeous, so I couldn’t pick one…
I enjoyed the photo tour!
I voted for 6 but I liked 1 too. And I’m not in the south!! That was fun and all the wreaths are beautiful. Happy holidays to you both.
After very close inspection, I chose #3 — but I’d absolutely hide the door knocker as it distracts enormously from the wreath. I like the way the berries and pine cones accent the door and the brick tones. (And doesn’t it have a nice country feel?)
All the best to two very special people!

Merry Christmas E & J!
I loved loved loved that last one but chose number 5 because it’s just so so so tiny compared to the door I found it humorous. But hey, that’s me!
I love the first one! I just recently found your blog, but I love it and I watched Top Design all the time!
I love that the magnolia leaves are a sweet little taste of the south in the fabulous west village…and the gorgeous brown/green color combo? swoon.
Hey Eddie and Jai!
I love numero uno!
Wish I could have been there with you guys.
Hopefully I will catch up to ya in ATL.
This comment comes with wishes for very Happy Holidays and much, much success in the year to come…muah!
God, I miss New York at Christmas!!!
i love #1 the best, but really, they’re all classically beautiful. there’s something so “edith wharton” about all of them.
Eddie, it would not let me vote, so i had to put my vote into comments. my favorite is #6. simple and stylish!

What a great idea! I might have to steal this for a post idea next year!!
Magnolia leaves win me over every time!
Wonderful post, Eddie.

IF I’m not mistaken, isn’t that the Gambrel house in photo number 1 featured in the new Elle Decor? Just gorgeous!!
