All this talk of digging for treasure has inspired yet another shopping expedition through one of my favorite flea markets—the D.C. Big Flea in Chantilly, Virginia—and I hope you'll join me!
Here's a sneak peak at all the fun we had the first time around.
Michelle from My Notting Hill was there, and here's what she had to say: A trip with Eddie to the flea market is a lesson in how to see things with new eyes: vintage broaches become framed art; dowdy furniture becomes hip and unique; and that brocade dress is a now a fab pillow. I walked away with tips on what to look for, what to avoid and a wealth of information on how to clean, restore and care for my finds. Plus, I had an absolute blast!
Meg from Pigtown Design came shopping with us, too! For months, I'd been wanting to join Eddie and Jaithan at the flea market, so when I heard they'd be at the D.C. Big Flea about 50 miles from me, I instantly made a reservation! I thought I knew my way around a flea market, but Eddie has a way of spotting a treasure that you'd otherwise never notice. Then he tells you what it is, how it was used and several ways to repurpose it for a new use. We learned what the good things were, which ones would increase their value, and which things to pass by without a second look. Eddie made the whole trip seem like a huge adventure and everyone had such a wonderful time!
And finally, here's why two-time participant Anne Statland keeps coming back for more!
For anyone interested in scouring flea markets, sign up with Eddie and Jaithan for a fun and informative adventure! I've thoroughly enjoyed the two flea markets I've gone to with them—one in D.C. and the other in New York and have even signed up again for the D.C. Big Flea in September! Eddie has a great eye for items that are well-worn but salvageable and generously shares those ideas with market goers. It's a lot of fun and great bargains can be found. When Jaithan puts out the word in your area of the country, run—don't walk—and sign up to join them for a great experience!
We'll be at the D.C. Big Flea on Saturday, September 18th at 11:00 am. Tickets are $50 per person. Space is limited, so email Jaithan (jaithan@eddieross.com) for reservations. Hope to see you in Chantilly, everyone!
SO SO EXCITED for this! My reservation was confirmed today for the 10th in ATL (thanks, Jaithan)!
Eddie you are going to be in Atlanta!
I’m only two hours away. I just emailed my reservation!
I can not make this go around 🙁 But please check out the Brimfield Fair in Brimfield MA for a possible shopping trip with your favorite fans. It’s the largest outdoor antique show in New England held three times a year…with over 5,000 dealers…..drool….
Bummer! I won’t be in either of those cities anytime soon. Maybe someday you can come visit Chicago? ‘Course, I just moved here and have no clue where the good places to shop are anyhow.
Hey Eddie and Jaithan, Ever thought of a San Francisco Flea Market Trip, hint, hint.
This would be a great idea for a show. I loved your before’s and after’s.
I don’t know if Top Design edited you a certain way, but you came off as pretty mean and haughty. if that isn’t how you are – I hope your true personality shows itself through this blog/future tv appearances
oh, eddie! you’re going to be in atlanta? i live 30 mins north in a suburb. i would love to go to scotts with you…my mother + i have gone EVERY month for at least 5 years… but unfortunately, i’ll probably be delivering my own little flea market goer at that time. 🙁 + 🙂
will you ever come back to atlanta to go junking?? please say yes!!
natalie. (buford, ga.)
I see you’re venturing south. Texas soon? As in HOUSTON??????
argghh!! i keep trying to reserve a spot for 12/14 ny flea market trip and the link won’t let me…any advice?!?
Hi Eddie,
Loved Top Design although I must admit I love your blog even more! By the way, what color white did you paint that pretty china cabinet that you made over? I’m sure its Martha Stewart paint, but if not, please advise. My favorite is Martha’s French Bulldog Black. I paint everything with it! Trying to plan a trip to Atlanta, maybe we will see you there! Thanks for the inspiring pictures and ideas!
Hey Eddie,
Let me know if you plan a trip back to Cold Spring. It would be my guess that the local Chamber of Commerce would make much of your visit. I remember renting a riverfront house to you and Alex Heatly a couple summers past. I was thrilled when you mentioned your time here on the Design show. I was rooting for you Eddie!
Hi Eddie. You must include the Brooklyn Flea on your flea market trip–we have the best stuff in town! We also have an awesome holiday gift market at a Masonic Temple across the street. Every Sunday in Fort Greene, we’ll welcome you with open arms.
How about coming to Todd Farm in Rowley MA next Spring…and please let me know if you’re coming to Brimfield and taking folks around. I’d love to join in!!
Many thanx!
apartment therapy said you are offering an la trip?? rose bowl???
I will absolutely do one of these when Spring hits. I’m a weenie in the cold.
I just might plan a work trip to Atlanta that accidentally coincides with your shopping trip. The bosses don’t have to know about my alterior motives.
I hope you can make it out to Boston (or the surrounding area) once the weather gets warmer!
Add the Adirondack’s to your next shopping trip. Upstate New York is an antique stomping ground for unique county & cottage furniture….plenty of primitives antiques here will make you trip worth an exciting one.
PS Bring your ski’s…
Eddie, check out Metrolina Expo outside of Charlotte. It’s a really big one that draws a lot of people.
LOVE, Love, love Scott’s! I’ll be there, but not on the tour. 🙁 I’m looking for some dining room chairs…
Hope you enjoy your trip to the sunny South!
PLEASE PLEASE COME TO NC! I will drive to Charlotte as it is closer than Atlanta.
The Metrolina brags hosting an antique show every month. I have never been because I have no clue when it comes to antiques. But, I would pay for a tour there hands down!
Think about it;)
Eddie,
I can’t figure out how to get in touch with you privately (don’t want to blog and want to say hi on my own). I knew you way back when in catering in Greenwich (will only give my first name…Sue M). Lisa B. just saw you on Martha Stewart. want to share a giggle. get in touch with me!
Hi Eddie! I’m so excited about coming to Atlanta on January 10th with my friend Rhoda from Southern Hospitality to “flea market” with you! Please stop by my blog if you get a chance at http://www.gracioussouthernliving.blogspot.com
See you on the 10th!
Judy
Eddie and Jaithan, please make a calendar of the cities you will be stopping in for the flea markets. If I had known in advance I would have tried to make it to Atlanta. It would be nice to know if you come close to Cincinnati in the near future. Even Cleveland would do!!!
Eddie, Just a note – there’s a nice Antiques Flea Market just outside of Lambertville, NJ which is/has been a destination for New Yorkers for years called the Golden Nugget. Close to New Hope, in Bucks County, which is good for a getaway with B&B’s and a real bevy of fab restaurants in both Lambertville and New Hope. Lambertville has even more antique stores in town. Try the People’s Store on your next trip. 3 stories of vendors.
Eddie and Jaithan, You guys must, must, must come out to SoCal. Our Pasadena Rose Bowl is a must on your list. Our flea market is held the first Sunday of every month. It is a heavenly place to shop.
Didn’t make it out to NYC for your antiquing trip. Please let me know of future dates in NYC or SoCal.I am dying to go!!!
Eddie I am so excited to meet you at the Pasadena flea market/swap meet….hey….my silver smith told me to use “tarni-shield” it is manufactured by 3M. it works like a charm….Unfortunately it is hard to come by…..Have you used it?
P. S. love the website… I have a short cut on my desk top….
YAY! Jaithan just emailed me back saying there was room!!! I will be saving my dollars!!! 🙂
Do you have any plans of coming down south?? I would love to visit a flea market with you!!! please please please come to Florida!!!
Any plans for a European trip? I would love to do the Portobello Rd flea market or any of the Parisian ones. Aren’t you just dying to make a trip to Europe? C’mon, you know you want to!
Eddie,
Love your website and all the useful information!
Can you put silver flatware in the dishwasher?
Thanks!
eddie:
Can I tag along at the Rose Bowl?
Haven’t been there in years!
X
Joe Nye
Hi Eddie! Wish I could go to the Rose Bowl with you…I enjoyed Scott’s so much! I wanted to share with you and your readers a couple of great finds I made at the Rose Bowl…
http://theconfettichronicles.blogspot.com/2009/03/rose-bowl-flea-market-finds.html
Enjoy!
I flew from Seattle to go to the Rose Bowl Flea market yesterday and found the most incredibly fun stuff …. now how to get it all on the plane home 😉
When are you coming to Miami?! We would love to go shopping with you.
Hi Eddie! Those trips sound like so much fun! We found your blog through Janet from the It’s an evolution Blog and certainly enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed watching you in TV…we’ll be back!!…
Us poor west-coasters. 🙁
I will live vicariously through your blog. And cross my fingers for 2010.
Have fun shopping!
These ‘webisodes’ are fantastic. It’s nice to see the cool things you find!
you are too adorable! I thought I was the only one who was that excited about flea market finds!
xo
LOVED the video! Have you thought about coming to the Nashville Flea Market? I know I would definately join you, as would my mom. It wouldn’t be too far of a drive for Southern Hospitality 🙂 (Her blog is where I found you) The Nashville Flea Market is usually the 4th weekend of every month, with no admission price. If not this year, maybe next…
Love the webisodes! You’re gearing me up for tag/estate sale season, and I can not look at flatwear the same! I am surprised that you are not hitting the Brimfield Flea Market?
I commented under the wrong post. I am beside myself with excitement , you are coming to Alameda, Calif. Dec 6th, I am doing the happy dance. I finally will get to meet you, this is too good to be true. I am marking it on my calendar right now. I really liked the video, almost like being there. I can not wait to see what you do with all of your wonderful purchases. See you in Dec. xoxxoKathysue
…can’t wait for you to come back to LA!
Oh my!
No kidding Eddie – I could watch you all day long! This is the first time I am “meeting” you in person. I would LOVE to see you with your own tv show – but I am assuming that it would take a huge amount of time away from your life as you know it. But I’d be happy with these little snippets – keep them coming. VERY entertaining and informative and just plain FUN!!
Brillant video!!!! I have watched it five times today! Just LOVE your fabulous finds — and can’t wait to see your latest projects! Best of all — I adore the tall tulipiere — and yes!! just imagine having appetizers on pretty skewers or toothpicks in that — on a gorgeous table — of course! Or as a centerpiece with gorgeous flowers! Breathtaking!
Jan at Rosemary Cottage
Love your video! I almost felt like I was there, Eddie. Thanks a lot.
Hi Eddie, I would love to go shopping with you. How about coming to Denver sometime!! Enjoy all your trips and please share with us.
NO YOU CAN’T COME TO KANE COUNTY IN JUNE…I HAD PLANS ON BEING OUT OF TOWN!!!!! OH NOW YOU DID IT….I am so confused on how to handle that weekend. I will have to come back early 🙂 I can’t possiblly miss you coming into my neck of the woods….
You might want to check out Sandwich Antiques Market…http://www.antiquemarkets.com/
They normally have better vendors but with the economy everyone is hurting. If you like I could do a walk through for you in May, just to see what they have…photos etc??? Let me know.
Oh …the choices.
Janet
Eddie, Round Top is great, but you should also come check out Urban Market in Houston (which is held twice a year, in November and February). It’s great!
[I also maybe want you selfishly to come to Houston so I can go shopping with you!]
Love the webisode Eddie! What fun it would be to go shopping with you, but since I can’t, keep the webisodes coming! Love the tulipierie! Carla
Hope your birthday was as much fun as those fab finds.
Just how cute could you be–and talent to boot! Really, only skilled tailgater’s know how to make table duds look that good in the back of a truck! So impressed!
Come by for a visit. Love to have you stop by!
http://GrannySmithGreen.blogspot.com
Eddie, I went to my first flea market and loved it. Found a vintage sofa for $90!
Wow you are going to be busy! Sounds like a great way to see the best that flea markets have to offer around the country….Maybe Maine in 2010???
Tricia – Avolli
Happy Be-lated Birthday! Today is Earth Day and I am so happy you gather great joy in others “junk.” It’s a beautiful thing, really.
Eddie, just watched the “Elephant’s Trunk” video and loved it! I was looking at your shopping schedule and didn’t see “Brimfield”? Would you consider going there? As you probably know, it’s a great show!
Meme
Hi everyone!
One note on Brimfield: While I think there’s a lot to offer, at this point, so many people know about it that I just find it overwhelming and overpriced. With the others on the list, there’s still room to move around and find a bargain!
Eddie
Oh, I will be a couple of the dates! I cannot wait. Farmington and New Milford, oh yea! Whoopee!
You did it again! Amazing. Love seeing your finds…looking forward to seeing more!
Chloe
As a Bostonian, I encourage folks in New England to go to the Todd Farm event! It’s one of our best kept secrets… but GO EARLY in the morning!! Brimfield? Eh. Todd’s is the best. And take Route 1A back to Boston through Essex and all the cute little towns along the way. Essex has some FABULOUS antique shops (a claim to fame) and amazing fried clams! A box of fried clams, some flea market finds, and a cold beer on the ocean. It may very well be the perfect fall day!
Eddie:
You do know there is a spring Christie sale on May 23? There is always a spring and fall one.
These are excellent shows but I am sure you know that already 😉
Lisa
Knitty, Vintage and Rosy
A written AND video blog . . . brilliant!
I’m sorry, though, that you won’t be coming to Santa Fe, but have just heard that our flea market has gone downhill since being moved from the opera grounds to Tesuque Pueblo lands. Well, you’ll have to plan a trip someday soon just for our beautiful town, our wonderful restaurants, our drop-dead views . . . and a cocktail party in your honor at our mountain home instead.
Love the red and white table cloth, when is the lobster bake?
Eddie! I want to come see you and Jaithan again!
Lame! No Seattle? We have better sales than ANYONE! 😉 😉 Anytime you’re stopping through, Eddie, let me know – I’ll give you a tour!
Hi Eddie! Wow I’ve missed you. I’ve been AWOL for a while (but not on purpose) But I’m happy to be back.
I love the listings of flea markets. You will be a busy man! I lived in Washington D.C. for a number of years and I visit friends there in September around my birthday. I think I may be there for the
D.C. Big Flea. I love D.C. I find it an exciting city – and of course the Kennedy Center is the place to be for me! Hope to see you there. ciao!
Well you won’t be in Minneapolis,(where I’m from), but I see you’ll be in Round Top, TX y’all! I was there in the spring with Sue Whitney from Junk Market Style and it was an absolute hoot! You for sure will have to try to make it to the Junk Gypsy’s Prom. I’m hoping to be there, maybe bringing a whole crew! Btw, thanks for the personal welcome. It really meant a lot!
You need to have a tv show!
It’s fun to watch you because you’re well informed about your items and your enthusiasm and appreciation of small, simple things is really infectious.
Anyone who has the chance to go flea marketing with you shouldn’t pass it up!
Happy, happy birthday to you! Has Spring sprung at your new house? Its always exciting to see what plants come up at a new abode when you move there in winter. I hope something special was in the yard, like lots and lots of lilac bushes.
Eddie…i’m thrilled you’re coming to Todd Farm on October 18th…right after my birthday!! Please sign me up. The only problem is that for some reason i’m unable to link to J’s email to sign up. Any chance you can send me his address?!
And…make sure to check out the ETC. SHOP if you ever get to Meredith NH, right near Squam Lake and Lake Winnepesaukee (sp?). Like a flea market you have to have an eagle eye…but if you spend some time hunting you can walk out with fabulous finds as I did this past weekend!
Eddie and Jaithan,
Tell me so that I am not a dreamin… Kane County in June…. I am going to make sure I am around and if so I will be there for sure…
How can I not go meet you since you will be at least 30 minutes from me.
Kane County is awesome and you must meet some of my favorite vendors…. Geneva is right around the corner and it’s beautiful as can be.
WOW I am truly excited. I will post this info on my blog if you both don’t mind.
And did I miss a birthday… don’t tell me you are an ARIES…. just like moi….
have a wonderful evening!
Angelica
Eddie, I am excited about your coming to Alameda CA.
Antiques By The Bay is a HUGE place to go to find some many things for everyones taste.
I have two blogs and would love for you stop by something and say hello.
manyfondmemories.blogspot.com
romanticfrenchcountry.blogspot.com/
I went there recently with a blogsister and found some great things.
CIao
Dearest Eddie,
Since you’ll be in Chicago on June 6, you should stop by my neighborhood’s annual garage sale in the morning on the way to the Kane Co Flea Market. Bagels and coffee in my backyard and shopping in a neighborhood that has Historic Landmark status….
http://www.cityofchicago.org/Landmarks/V/VillaDistrict.html
Tempted? Shoot me an email!
If not for my brother getting married on June 13, I would be at Scott’s in a heartbeat. Happy hunting!
Hey Eddie…Come to Portland OR..whenever I’m out shopping with my partner I always find items and say Eddie would love this! lol So please consider bringing your fabulousness to Portland..we will even treat yall to dinner and cocktails!
Oh Eddie, I am so disappointed! I am going to be almost 9 months pregnant when you come to Texas for the Round Top Antiques Fair. 🙁 I hate that I’ll likely have to miss it. By the time I know if I’ll feel up to going, it will be too late to book a spot.
Promise you’ll come to Austin in the future!
How do I buy tickets for your shopping trip to Scott’s Antique Mart in Atlanta in June?
Eddie & Jaithan,
What a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful time I had with you both at last weekends NYC trip. I can’t stop looking at my vase!
Anyone who wants something unique, needs some inspiration, and just wants to have a great time should sign up.
Eddie & Jaithan — Shopping the New York flea markets with you was a ball! I can’t wait to see the re-cap and I will send you photos of all my treasures in their new home!
Kris C.
Hi Eddie,
I’m very excited you are coming to Canada…The Christie show is fantastic, the best around, you will find lots of treasures as we have done many times in the past…the show is actually not in Toronto but 40 min. or so west and the park location is beautiful…just attented the May show and found 2 great metal building banks to add to my collection for half the price I paid last year plus a beautiful mortor and pestal set….Hope to see you there!
Hi Eddie! We are excited to hear you are coming to Kane County- and hope you can find OUR booth near the West Gate. Two tan canopies near the end with a floral banner we made from upholstery scraps. We are the IowaJunkGypsies and we have a ton of fun!
Hello,
A little confused on the Washington, DC flea market. The link goes to a site with 3 different flea markets listed (none of which is the historic Eastern Market, newly re-opening soon after a tragic fire about a year ago)…but alas none of the dates listed on the seperate link, match to the dates you have posted for Washington, DC…???? Can you clarify? Thanks!
I hope at some point you all will consider coming to Charlotte, NC for Metrolina. There is one every month and then a huge one a few times a year. http://www.metrolinatradeshowexpo.com/shows-antique.html
Eddie,
Could you pretty please with a cherry on top come to south FL? You and J can stay at our beach house!
xx
Kara
Are you still going to be at the Round Top TX weekend? I don’t see it listed anymore?
Eddie — I’m hoping you’ll do one more swing through NYC for a flea event in Chelsea this fall. HINT HINT HINT!
Just love to get down to the markets in the summer, bargains all around.

Looks so tempting. Will join you at some point and that is a promise! x
Hi,
I signed up last year but couldn’t go at the last minute – maybe this year will work out!
When you’re in the area you should definitely check us out at Chartreuse and Co. – it’s a big old barn sale!
http://www.chartreuseandco.com
I hope to meet you at the flea!
Any time spent with you + Jaithan is priceless. Lucky DC folks! xoxo, P
Please schedule something at the Rose Bowl flea market so us so.cal girls can join the fun.
Eddie & Jaithan ~
Sounds like there
could be a book
in here….Sort
of a “tour guide”
for scouting treasures
at flea markets, with
just the sort of tips
you provided to Michelle
and Meg…..
THINK about it : ) !!!
Wish I could come!
I’ll be at Junk Bonanza
in Minneapolis that
weekend. Wish I had
that tour book along,
with me, so get going!
xx Suzanne
ooo my! Sounds like too much fun—wishing VA would be closer to Kansas! : )
Wish I could be there. Heard it through the grapevine that you are going to be in Little Rock soon. We don’t have any huge flea markets like this but my shop is in a great Antique Mall and there is a pretty good flea near by. Would love to take you shopping! Mona
If anyone is wavering — GO! You’ll have the best time.
My mind is swirling, have family in DC, might be fun to make the trip…will have to see. Been wanting to go shopping with you…would be soooo much fun. Are you all coming down to Charlotte this year??? –Gretchen
You are the best! I am sure it’s a blast 🙂
xo
Edyta
The blog is really nice. Prefer your ways and style to look stylish and cool. Thanks for sharing with all such a valuable information.
I’m still kind of sulking over the fact that I’m in Norway and you guys in the US. I want to come too!!
Next time I come over the pond you have to promise to meet up with me 😀
Have fun in D.C.!!

Eddie & Jaithan PLEASE COME TO AUSTRALIA!
These expeditions for hidden treasures are so on my to-do list!
What fun!!! One of these days, I’m gonna do a flea market tour with you! xoxo Elizabeth
See you then!
I love watching your videos with a nice cup of coffee (iced these days)! It’s like my own special design school online 🙂
So, anything planned for a flea market or antiques hunt in Massachusetts any time soon??
Chris
Are ya’ll still coming to Extravaganza in Charlotte in November–? Working on the B&B–Lakeside! I promise you will not regret it! Jaithan–let me know. Kathleen
Love those girls!
Wish I could join you in DC!
You could teach this old dog some new tricks!
xo xo

Is it just a coincidence that you have pictures of the vintage scarf pillow article I just said I saw you in?
Too funny!

–Bryant
I think Suzanne’s idea for a book is great!
I really wish I could attend, you guys are sooo much fun!
we can’t wait!!!!
DANCE
After reading about your upcoming shopping trip, I also just had to show you these auction pictures and once you get past the first icky couple of pictures of flags, you’ll see things that will make you want to catch the first flight into Denver this weekend. Besides the fab furniture, check out the other finds like the wishing well, small weather vane complete with rooster on the top and oh, oh, just too many things to list. Here’s the site: http://denvergypsyboys.com. Just click on the “Next Sale Page” to get to the pictures.
Barbara
OH MY GOD! I must have those white chairs. They are incrediable. Dying to know how much they were in the store? Don’t tell me they were a steal or I’ll have to commit myself. When are you coming back to LA for the flea markets – I would love to spend the day shopping with you guys! Come to Long Beach or Pasadena!
I just found your site (referenced on Southern Comfort blog) and I just have to say, you guys are amazing. I so wish I lived in the DC area (grew up there) so I could go flea’ing with you. I think you need to come out to the California SF Bay area for a flea market weekend. If you’re ever setting something up on the west coast I sure hope I’ll be able to make it. I love your blog.
Score on that white cockatiel lamp with black shade.
Hi Eddie and Jaithan!
Can you tell me if you will have a spin around any of the Fleas in NJ?
Thanks for the inspiration, as always.
Zena
I adore those big floor pillows. I still have a stash of silk scarves I picked up on my shopping trip with you guys at the Rose Bowl, and I need to get them to a seamstress so I can start enjoying my own boho-chic pillows.
This sounds like a not-to-be missed opportunity. I’ve been going to Big Flea markets since the beginning at the State Fairgrounds in Richmond … there used to be so much wonderful stuff to be had at not-to-be-believed prices. Big Flea has gone Big Time, there are more dealers, more locations, and stuff costs more. It’s still WELL worth the trip.
I will be at my booth, selling heirloom roses, at the plant sale at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond on Sept 17 and 18. I’ll have to wait till the 19th to run to Chantilly to see if you left any good stuff for us late-comers.
Have fun.
Connie
Hi Eddie, Is there going to be a bus tour for the Brimfield, MA shows this year leaving the NJ/NY area? I would be very interested. Thanks! Judy
