Spent the weekend milling about town…
First up, a brass and ebony mid-century modern chafing dish in near-perfect condition. All it needs is a good polish. Up here, fall is coming on fast and furious, so naturally, I'm already planning our holiday party. Maybe this year, I'll do a creamy brie fondue with toasted brioche and crisp, green apples.
These oval baking dishes I love, especially for warm, wintry pot pies. They're Arabian pottery of FInland, probably from the 50s, with pretty fluted finials. I used to rent similar ones from prop houses in the city all the time for magazine shoots.
Our Goodwill finds, including six more octagonal brass chargers, just like the ones we used here.
Cross the road to a thrift shop we hadn't been to in ages and look what Jaithan found for 75 bucks.
It's a 1960s, gilded faux bamboo étagère with glass shelves. We'd been looking for something just like it for so long, it's like the measurements were permanently burned into my brain. We're in an old farmhouse, tending towards Laura Ingalls, so we like to up the glam factor whenever we can. Finally, all the vintage decorating and garden books have a home.
The side chair, by the way, I just recovered for a shoot here at the house with a quirky black on tint linen from Quadrille called Ziggurrat. We're contributing to designer Celerie Kemble's new book all about black and white, due out next year. First things first, though, and that means another shopping trip (or two) with readers this Saturday the 18th to one of my favorite flea markets just outside D.C. Click here to see what others are saying.
The first trip at 11 is sold out, but there's still about 5 spots left for the second one at 2. Shoot Jaithan an email (jaithan@eddieross.com) for a spot, and we'll see you Saturday!
i’m so jealous of all your finds, ESPECIALLY the etegere! miss you guys! xoxo
Oh, I adore that fantastic etagere!! I am ABSOLUTELY SICK that I am missing your trip to Charlotte!!!!
Oh wow, that étagère is something else. Great find!
Hi Eddie… haven’t been to your site in awhile. It’s still as interesting as ever! I love it that you and Jaithan have such a great relationship that you are able to agree on pieces that you need for your home and search for them together. I wish I had that in a relationship. 🙂
Loving your blog as always!
Hugs,
Becky @ Harmony and Home
I’m loving gold cutlery at the moment. Zara Home has some great pieces in their cutlery range (not vintage, obvs, but affordable and fun!)
“Bright eyed and brassy!”
Great finds you two!
Happy Autumn.

What a great find that étagère was and it looks wonderful in your home. Fall is coming on quickly in the northeast as well and like you I’ve already started thinking about the holidays. Good luck with your show!
Have fun at the Big Flea! I went last year and had a blast. Looking forward to hearing more about your holiday party…I could use some new ideas for mine.
Love that etagere shelving, great and looks good with the stacks of books.
I love it.

You crack me up! I love the Laura Ingalls reference. What a great find, it has just the right glam factor. The chair is so pretty too. I love the shape of it, especially with the more modern fabric.
E & J, I’m SO LOVIN’ your oval baking dishes! I have chicken pot pie on the menu this week too! A deep dish peach or apple cobbler would be fabulous too! YUM! I WISH I could come to the DC flea! …I just realized how much I LOVE these !!!!! 😉
Love the etagere and how you found a place for it and stacked it with books! Great find! Also, thank you for coming to visit my blog – i was thrilled to see you had stopped by!!!! KG
You find the best stuff! I love that shelf and what a steal! I wish I could join you at the DC Big Flea, but I’m headed up to VT for the weekend.
You truly are a visionary!
Best,

See you on Saturday! Can’t wait.

Brie fondue with toasted brioche? yum, invite me over for that one please 🙂
And what a find, that bamboo étagère is fabulous!
Beautiful finds! I love the way you arranged the books on the étagère and I love the étagère itself.
I am lusting after those oval covered dishes. I have resisted Goodwill. I don’t know why. I obviously need to give it a try. Hope you guys are doing great and having a wonderful week.
Beautiful finds, as usual! Looks like I’m adding a Goodwill trip to my weekend plans!
You etagere is perfect in your space, and what a great find! My mother in law registered for Arabia of Finland pottery when she got married in 1958, love the pieces you found!
Wish I could join you this weekend at the Big Flea, but I have a photo shoot, have a wonderful time and happy hunting!
Kat 🙂
I love that etegere and $75. I’ve started collecting brass trays and other brass decor. I just hate polishing them, do you have any eco friendly suggestions for cleaning and polishing brass?
Your Goodwill and my Goodwill are NOT the same! What awesome finds!
I just love a goodwill find! That étagère is gorgeous with all of your books on it. (really liking the chair) and Celerie Kemble is one of my Favorites! Can’t wait for the new book. I really wanted to go to Chantilly, but thought you all might think I was being a bit stalkerish if I did that AND Charlotte!:):) –Gretchen O.
LOVING the etagere!
The fondue pot is great!! Made me a bit nostalgic for the one we had growing up…when it was theee *thing* to have fondue parties! The brie, brioche, apple idea sounds delicious…a fancy French fondue!
Your shelving unit is wonderful…there was some pretty neat items in the background at the shop too. Congrats on such a perfect find!
xo J~
OH WHAT FINDS!! fantastic
We need to go shopping with you – what finds! Celerie stopped by in August to borrow a couple of bouquets for her new book – can’t wait to see the final result!
I’ve forever wanted an etagere just like that….
hoping to join you in Charlotte!
What fantastic finds! That bookcase is just PERFECT, I love its new look!
I love that bookcase! I’ve been scouring craigslist for months for something just like it for our office/guest room – lucky!
LOVE that bookshelf- amazing find!
Hi eddie and jaithan,
saw your photo of the brass shelving unit found at a thrift store … my eye drifted to the metal bed to the right of the photo….just my style if it’s there next time you go please pick it up…I’ll come and get it from your neck of the woods
cheers
Ya’ll are spectacular! Can I even say how excited I am about November?!!!
loved this post! your “finds” are truly divine. xx peggy
I’m kicking myself for not stopping at the Goodwill in New Milford, CT over Labor Day weekend. You always inspire me with your great finds! I’m thinking a Lobster Pot Pie would be lovely right around now!
Missed you guys. Glad you are back and what great finds. I was at Goodwill two weeks ago and found a clear glass vase with an orange blown glass rim for 99 cents!!! I was so proud.
Hi E&J, Boy you guys found some great pieces. Love the etagere, I remember those from the 70’s very well and only you could make it look fresh and young. Love your take on style. Looking forward to your Fall inspiration, You always get me going in a fun direction!! have fun shopping, I know all the people that signed up will be Sooooo Glad that they went, I know I sure would be. xoxo Kathysue
I am in love with the etagere! Very billy baldwin.
I think you Goodwill is better than ours is. Or maybe it’s just your “eye”.
Arabia is one of the biggest export in Scandinavia (from Finland). Such a huge amount of beautiful things!
All the old things from older collections are really popular here right now.
I love flea markets. Have done my favourite bargains there!
Kind regards,
Johanna from Sweden
Quick hello from Sweden!
Just ducking in to read my favourite posts and needless to say, this is my first stop! x
Love the brass shelf! What a great find!
Also congratulaitons on the book contribution! Can’t wait to see the release.
Lucky those who can come with you on the ‘Chantilly’ flea. Will be fun and I can’t wait to see your reports on that one!
All the best.
xx Charlotta
I live in your area. Would you be willing to reveal which Goodwill store you visited? I love all your finds, but especially the Arabia of Finland pottery!
Now that etagere as displayed in the store might have been something I would have walked right by. But to see it in your home and with such a great display of books transformed it. You both have great eyes! I am always impressed by your finds.
Fantastic find! So exciting about your contribution in Celerie’s upcoming book!!!
xo Elizabeth
I can’t wait to go shopping with you this saturday! I wish my goodwill was as good as your, those chargers are beautiful!
Love all the fabulous finds! That brie fondue sounds amazing; do you have a recipe you use often? If so, would you mind sharing? Like you, I’m excited to start gathering ideas for our annual holiday party. And that sounds too delicious to not include!
Hi Eddie and Jaithan,

I am always amazed at how you and J. know what things are when you are out and about finding treasures. I love to look through for treasures for entertaining and my home but have no idea what things are called, if they are original or knock off etc. Do you have any book suggestions that could help me learn more about this sort of thing? I look at B&N and usually end up overwhelmed and back to the sewing section. Lol.
Wonderful post as always. Thanks! Wish I was able to make it to DC. Have fun!
What fabulous finds! I love your site; I do so enjoy seeing all of your wonderful ideas – party table settings, decor, thrifty finds and how you incorporate them, etc. Little did I know (before I read through every single one of your posts) that I had, of course, seen your work in magazines in the past – and admired it immensely, I might add.
I cannot figure out if there is a way to e-mail you directly, if that’s even possible? I wanted to ask whether I might have your permission to show one of your photos on my little blog – I would include a link to yours, of course, if it was all right with you?
If it is even possible that you might be able to respond, you can e-mail me through my profile on my blog.
Looking forward to having a fun time shopping with you on Sat.!! I’m anxious to see your masterful eye in action! Bravo on the great finds in this post!
That etergere is amazing! Looks even better in your home!
Eddie, I think I would have fought you in the aisle of Goodwill for that etagere! 🙂 You’re lucky to have someone to do that fun shopping with (who has the same taste)!
we can’t wait to see you!!!
and i’m so jealous of your etagere find!!! oh my goodness!!!
xoxooxo
My Mom had those white dishes too! Loving the etagere- perfect find for your treasure trove of books! Lovin’ it.
awesome scores!! way to rock out the glass and brass shelf unit for all the decor books. 😀
Eddie! I have the exact same etagere that I bought on Craiglist for $85 – and then since I am truck-less it was delivered for $20. I absolutely loooove it! I have it in my bedroom that has charcoal walls and I have all of my white milk glass collection and white books on it! I hope I styled it right! LOL!
SCORE on the étagère Jaithan! Have fun in DC! ~Tracy
Everyone have a blast with E+J on Saturday. We can’t wait to see the next round of treasures!
I love that étagère, it’s perfection!
It made me laugh when you said you’ve been looking for something for that corner for so long that the measurements are burned into your mind 😀 because I have a similar issue with a corner of my dining room.
I have been looking for a console table for ages, but none of the ones I have seen seem quite right. Maybe I should follow your example and search in the local thrift stores, or “Brockenhaus” 😉
LOVE LOVE LOVE the etagere! LUCKY!
The etergere looks amazing! I love Goodwill and I make sure to swing by one of those stores whenever I’m in the states.
A few weeks ago I found two beautiful candlesticks in really thin glass. The fact that I live in Sweden didn’t stop me from buying them. I tend to ship home the craziest things but those items are really precious to me now! 🙂
LOVE the etagere!! And these are my favorite types of posts:) I am trying to change my schedule around so I can see y’all in CLT. xoxo
Those bookshelves make me oh so jealous. One day I will come over and steal them :)))
xox
man, i never have any luck at goodwill, but so many people do. that thrift store find was amazing! and i love what you did with the chair.
I love the etagere. Some of the most amazing things can be found at Goodwill and thrift stores! And you guys are masters at finding the best those stores have to offer.
a new visitor, just popped in
for a peek. Very nice items.
yvonne
Ooo, I love a good treasure hunt!! Great finds, thanks for the inspiration!!
Seriously you two are my rock stars!!! Your blog is truly one of my favorites!!! Great finds once again!!
Love your etagere, its such an amazing find! Seeing it in your house and styled to perfection is so great (and that chair with the gorgeous black and white fabric too!)
Happy Hunting at the Big Flea! Hope you find lots of treasures!
I don’t want to lose you tonight, ’cause you’re the only thing that mmmmmmatters! Hugs from, Jan Terri (Chicago)
Wow, yall scored on the etagere…I absolutely LOVE it!
We also have the Laura Ingalls type farmhouse in Austin w/the modern twist….ck out my blog sometime and we have a few pics posted of the farmhouse….adding more soon!
All the best,
J
Really looking forward to our shopping trip tomorrow, to hear all your creative tips! See you then.
what a great feeling to find a item for decorating the apartment. Thank you for your very intreting pictures, have a great weekend, with a lot of Fleamarkets 🙂 regrads jürgen
Eddie, just wanted to say I’m so glad to see that you haven’t shunned brass like so many have recently. I was thrilled to see your beautiful lamp in the picture. It’s gorgeous. Brass has gotten a bad rap the last few years and I’m glad to see it’s making a comeback. I drug out a couple of my old brass candlesticks while doing my fall decorating and it made me remember how much I love it. Keep up the good work. I’ll keep checking in….:)
You two are amazing! First, I love fondue…hint, hint…I’ll take an invite to any party with fondue. One of my staples for holiday parties is homemade chocolate fondue with fresh bananas, strawberries, pound cake and yummy hard pretzels. People love mingling around fondue! Now, on to the etagere…I’m in love! The Chinoiserie influence is gorgeous. I would have bought that in a heartbeat. Kudos to you on your finds!
Ok, that’s it! I am so joining you on one of your upcoming hunting trips! When is the fall schedule coming up? Anything on the west coast or in NY?
That gilded faux bamboo étagère has my name on it! Really guys, you don’t need it! (: (I am just slightly envious).
Enjoy your weekend.
ox, Mon
I hope your shopping tours yesterday were successful, and that all your guests found fabulous treasures. The Chantilly Big Flea is a favorite of mine … alas, I must miss it this time.
Next time you are down this way, you MUST plan a trip to visit Suzanne and Richard at Squashapenny Junction in Doswell, Va. They are lovely, and their shop is completely unique. (Imagine ‘Country Store’, meets ‘Antique Shop’, meets ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’.) I was there yesterday, as I returned home from a day in Richmond, and a beautiful advertising sign was my find of the day.
You’re so fun to read. As everyone else, I have etagere envy – GOOD FIND!!!!!! it has given me the fork to my butt to get out to those Goodwill and thrift shops.
Happy hunting!
Joanne @ Rooms Bloom Blogspot
We love going out as me and my husband call it going out on a treasure hunt. You really did find lots of goodies.
HI guys…..

What great finds! That étagère is amazing.
I just purchased a gold shelf exactly like that at Goodwill several weeks ago – I loved it as soon as I saw it and my neighbor kindly let me borrow her vehicle to get it home. It looks perfect in our living room! I love the way you styled the books on yours!
$75? OMG I am so jealous! It is absolutely gorgeous!!!
Hi Eddie,
How are you? I was thrilled to see you left a comment on my blog. I almost fell over!! Thank you. Well please check out this post for the etagere that I have that is the exact same as the one you just recently purchased (and showed in this post). http://theglamlamb.blogspot.com/2010/09/blog-post.html
also – thank you again for all of your inspiring images! You really help me think outside of the box!
Take care,
Hallie
